Summer 2007 Theater Events
For the summer season 2007, Guild Hall will present a sampling of popular theater favorites in several venues, including an exciting season opener, a Garden Dance performance, the American Musical Theater Salutes series, staged playreadings, and a major production of a hit Off Broadway comedy.

On June 29th at 7:30pm, Guild Hall presents its Season Opener with John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey at The Maidstone Tennis Club in East Hampton. The marvelous married musical duo perform a heady mixture of lounge act, jazz and theater from the American Songbook, some of it tinged with a Brazilian accent-an event not to be missed!
At 6:30pm cocktails will be served. At 7:30 guests will enjoy dinner. At 9pm, swing the night away with John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey performance! $350 and $500 Benefit tickets available only through Guild Hall’s Development Office. Call 631-324-0806 ext. 13 for tickets

On July 21st from 4 –6 pm, Guild Hall presents The Ligeti Essays by Armitage Gone! Dance _t Tony Ingrao’s Huntting Lane Estate in East Hampton. Armitage Gone! Dance was launched in 2005 when Karole Armitage returned to the U.S. after 15 years of working abroad. The company is known for its poetic, dreamlike stage productions that combine new dance, music and art. The Ligeti Essays is a suite of concise, jewel-like movements choreographed to music by the great Hungarian composer György Ligeti. Alex Ross of The New Yorker Magazine calls Ligeti “the last figure on whose importance everyone could agree.” Senior dance critic, Clive Barnes, says of Armitage, “her new program is far out and altogether terrific.” Cocktails will be served at 4pm, and the Garden Performance begins at 5pm. Ticket prices are $30 General Admission/$100 VIP Cocktails (seating is limited to 100). Children under 12 are admitted free

On August 5th at 7:30pm, Guild Hall presents the popular American Musical Theater Salutes Series at East Hampton Studios, 75 Industrial Road, Wainscott. The first of two performances will be Heart to Hart: The Warmth and Wit of Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart, starring KT Sullivan and Eric Michael Gillett. In one of the most fruitful and doomed collaborations in the history of the American Musical Theatre, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart lent a phenomenal musical dimension to the golden age of Musical Comedy. Rodgers’s talent for turning out a gorgeously sweet melody was, for the 23 years of their union, uniquely matched by Hart’s sometimes deeply heartrending, mostly fiendishly clever and often sharply satiric verses. The public responded by making most of their shows, particularly A Connecticut Yankee, Babes in Arms, and On Your Toes resounding hits. Broadway stars KT Sullivan and Eric Michael Gillett join musical director James Followell and host Lee Davis to bring that bright and breezy age to life again. Tickets are $50 / $45 for GH members. Buy tickets to both AMT Salutes performances and attend post show “Meet the Stars” receptions in East Hampton Studios

On August 26th at 7:30pm, Guild Hall presents American Musical Theater Salutes at East Hampton Studios, 75 Industrial Road, Wainscott. The second AMT performance will be Berlin Goes to Hollywood, starring Melissa Errico and George Dvorsky. When, in the 1930s, Irving Berlin decided to expand his musical and creative horizons westward to Hollywood, Hollywood—and America—benefited mightily. With his string of musicals for Fred Astaire —Top Hat, Blue Skies, and Easter Parade—to the multiple musical movies made from his Broadway hits, Berlin had all of America singing and whistling such gems as “Isn’t This a Lovely Day?”, “Cheek to Cheek,” “Let’s Face the Music and Dance,” and “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm.” All this and much more will be delivered as treats for the eye and ear as Melissa Errico and George Dvorsky join musical director James Followell and host Lee Davis for an evening of tuneful Hollywood memories. Tickets are $50 / $45 for GH members. There will be a post show reception following the performance.

On August 12th at 8pm, Playwrights' Theatre of East Hampton presents a staged reading of Enter Laughing by Joseph Stein, adapted from the novel by Carl Reiner. The reading will be held at East Hampton Studios, 75 Industrial Road, Wainscott; it will be directed by Lewis J. Stadlen. Enter Laughing is the riotous account of a stage struck youth who works as a delivery boy in a sewing machine factory. His parents want him to be a druggist, but he enlists in a hammy, semi professional theater company that casts anybody for the right amount of money. He is a dreadful actor and the scene of his first performance is hilarious. He proceeds to splash through romantic scenes with the manager's daughter, with another fellow's date and finally with the office girl who was meant for him all the time. The NY Times calls the play "Marvelously funny....Doesn't provide enough rest periods between side splitting laughs." An audience Q&A with legendary comedy writer and playwright Joseph Stein follows the performance. Tickets are $20 / $18 members. There will be a post show dessert reception at the Studios.

On September 2nd at 8pm, Playwrights' Theatre of East Hampton presents a staged reading of The Shakespeare Road, a new comedy by Ruth Wolff, at East Hampton Studios, 75 Industrial Road, Wainscott. The play revolves around a gorgeous ingénue and a dashing matinee idol. Now these two theater animals are forced to share a shabby dressing room on the road. They match wits shortly before the curtain rises in a desperate effort to revive their flagging careers and salvage their wounded egos, all the while coming to terms with their aging, tempestuous lives and each other. Cast and director will be announced. An audience Q&A with performers, playwright and director follows the performance. Tickets are $20 / $18 members. There will be a post show dessert reception at the Studios.

On August 19th at 8pm, Guild Hall presents a staged reading of Oleanna by David Mamet at East Hampton Studios, 75 Industrial Road, Wainscott. Mamet’s play has been called “A seething investigation of political correctness in a time when the nation's morality has been tested by increased incidents of sexual harassment. Oleanna is likely to provoke more arguments than any play this year” – The NY Times. “One of the ten best plays of 1992…reason enough to cheer for the future of the theatre.” – Time Magazine. The play's title, taken from a folk song, refers to a 19th-century escapist vision of utopia. In Act I, Mr. Mamet locks one man and one woman in an office where, depending on one's point of view, an act of sexual harassment does or does not occur. In Act II, the antagonists, a middle-aged university professor and an undergraduate student, return to the scene of the alleged crime to try to settle their case without benefit of counsel, surrogates or, at times, common sense. Tickets are $20 General Admission / $18 Members.

SEASON HEADLINER: STEVE MARTIN’S COMEDY PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE
From August 14th – September 1st, Guild Hall presents our season headliner, Steve Martin’s hilarious Off Broadway hit, Picasso At the Lapin Agile at East Hampton Studios, 75 Industrial Road, Wainscott. The play stars Joe De Sane, Gerard Doyle, Nick Fondulis, Josh Gladstone, Ann Moller, Kate Mueth, Josh Perl, and Jonathan Peters; it will be directed by Josh Gladstone. This long running Off Broadway absurdist comedy places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian cafe in 1904, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism. In his first comedy for the stage, Steve Martin plays fast and loose with fact, fame and fortune as these two geniuses muse with infectious dizziness on the 20th century's prospects and achievements. The final surprise patron to join the merriment at the Lapin Agile is a charismatic dark haired singer time-warped in from a later era. "Highly credible and ... very funny. The subject matter is daring.... You get giggles in plenty [and] moments of enlightenment.... The introduction of the final, exquisitely selected visitor is a master stroke." - N.Y. Post. "Consistently entertaining." - N.Y. Daily News. "Very engaging.... Martin sends ideas onstage in baggy pants, with a cigar .... mix[ing] the sublime with the ridiculous [so] that they can't be easily disentangled.... Very good fun." - N.Y. Times. The play was the Winner of the 1996 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off Broadway Play. Tickets are $30 / $28 Members.

Picasso At the Lapin Agile Performances
All performances at East Hampton Studios begin at 8 pm. Tickets will be sold at the Guild Hall Box Office at 158 Main Street and also at East Hampton Studios one and a half hours before curtain call.

Tuesday, August (Preview #1) 14, (Preview #2) 15, 16 (Opening Night) 17, 18, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 28, 29, 30, 31 and September 1 (Final Performance)

On Sunday, July 29th at 8pm, Guild Hall presents a play by Mark Weston, Harry and Eddie: The Birth of Israel at East Hampton Jewish Center. The play stars Ed Asner and an ensemble cast TBA. Not much is know about the relationship between Harry S. Truman and Eddie Jacobsen, but their friendship helped Israel became a reality. Eddie Jacobsen, a haberdashery salesman and Harry S. Truman bonded during World War II when they were put in charge of a prosperous Army canteen. After the war, they opened a haberdashery store in Kansas that closed due to the Depression. Eddie became a traveling salesman and Harry, a politician, but their friendship endured. Harry was President in 1948 when the United Nations were contemplating the recognition of a homeland for the Jewish people. President Truman was adamant about not being harassed by Zionists. As a last resort, Jewish leaders asked Eddie to intercede with Harry Truman. Eddie visited the White House and after having their first argument, Harry agreed to meet with eminent scientist and Jewish Leader Chaim Weizman. On May 18, 1848, Israel was welcomed into the world family of nations. It was ‘beshert’ that friendship became instrumental in returning the Jewish people to their biblical homeland.
Tickets are $50 General Admission.

On August 20th and August 27th at 8:30pm, two films will be screened outside the Springs Public School, 48 School Street, in East Hampton. On August 20th, Guild Hall presents Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Special Edition 30th Anniversary screening, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Richard Dreyfuss, Francois Truffaut, Teri Garr and Bob Balaban. On August 27th, Guild Hall presents GREASE, directed by Randal Kleiser and starring John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John and Stockard Channing. Bring a blanket or a beach chair. These outdoor movies are free with a suggested donation of $10.
